(InMaOn / JH) Cineasten und Anhänger der indonesischen Filmkultur können sich freuen. Abseits des Mainstreamkinos präsentiert sich zum ersten Mal die Filmreihe »Indonesia On Screen«, vom 27. März bis 11. April 2018, im Babylon Kino in Berlin-Mitte. Das Programm bietet ein facettenreiches Abbild indonesischer Produktionen der letzten Jahre. Insgesamt wird es 57 Vorführungen geben, Spielfilme und Dokumentationen. Mehr zu den 12 Filmen weiter unten im Text.
Während die Filmkulturen Ostasiens mittlerweile fast schon zum hiesigen Kinoalltag gehören, sind die Produktionen aus Indonesien trotz ihrer Vielgestaltigkeit, trotz aller Festivalerfolge in unseren Breiten immer noch weitestgehend unbekannt.

Indonesien blickt auf viele Religionen, Kulturen, Sprachen und Traditionen – ein facettenreicher Archipel, der noch in einem gesellschaftlich-politischen Findungsprozess steckt. Historisch gesehen hat Indonesien unter dem alten Suharto-Regime zahlreiche politische Unruhen und viel Leid ertragen müssen, alle Bereiche des gesellschaftlichen Lebens beeinflussend. Ein Bereich ist die indonesische Filmindustrie, welche in der Post-Suharto Ära, »gerakan reformasi«, nach 1998 wiederbelebt wurde. Das indonesische Kino erfuhr eine Wiederauferstehung; es war der Beginn des modernen Kinos. Filmemacher haben seither die Freiheit, verschiedene Themen und Genres zu entdecken, die die Vielfalt Indonesiens widerspiegeln. Die Filmemacher haben seither den Mut, sensible ehemals verbotene Themen zur Sprache zu bringen. Die Tür der Transparenz und Redefreiheit ist unter ihnen geöffnet worden; und jetzt ist es an der Zeit, das auch die übrige Welt sehen zu lassen.

Mit »Indonesia On Screen« geht das Babylon einen neuen Weg. Erstmals wird die ausserordentlich kreative und lebendige Filmlandschaft des Landes intensiver denn je in Szene gesetzt. Denn, ein exklusives Indonesien-Filmfest gab es in Deutschland bisher noch nicht. Indonesien hat immer nur »mitgewirkt«, war Teil eines breiter angelegten Programms oder Formats. Bereits 2008, 2009 und 2010 konnten Freunde des indonesischen Kinos einige Produktionen im damaligen Programm des Asian Hot Shots Fimfestival in Berlin sehen, 2009 sogar mit einem filmischen Schwerpunkt »Indonesien«. Das Festival fand 2008 und 2009 im Babylon Mitte in Berlin statt.
Auch außerhalb Berlins gab es in den letzten Jahren immer wieder Screenings zeitgenössischer und experimentierfreudiger Werke indonesischer Filmemacherinnen und Filmemacher. Diese präsentierten sich vor allem bei den verschiedenen »Independent-Filmfesten«, unter anderem beim Cineasia Filmfestival Köln, der Dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg, dem Internationalen Dokumentarfilmfestival München sowie bei den Indonesien Filmtagen im Hamburger abaton Kino oder zuletzt mit der Filmreihe »Südostasien auf der Leinwand – Young Indonesian Cinema« in Köln.
Da es bisher aber noch kein Format gegeben hat, das den jungen, unabhängigen indonesischen Film in seiner Vielfalt über einen längeren Zeitraum vorstellte, ist es begrüßenswert, dass sich in dieser Richtung etwas zu ändern scheint. Nicht nur die jüngsten Produktionen – Marlina: Die Mörderin in vier Akten von Mouly Surya, erstmals einer breiteren deutschen Programmkinolandschaft vorgeführt, und der magische Film von Kamila Andini, Sekala Niskala, ausgezeichnet für den Besten Film in der Sektion Generation Kplus der 68. Internationalen Filmfestspielen in Berlin – zeigen wieder einmal, dass Indonesiens Filmkultur viel künstlerisch-kreatives Potential besitzt und dem internationalen Publikum zukünftig noch viel zu bieten hat.
Das Babylon Mitte, eines der bekanntesten Programmkinos Berlins, könnte diese immer noch vorhandene filmische Lücke in Deutschland ausfüllen. Auch für 2019 ist eine indonesisches Filmfestival geplant. Das würde passen. Denn im nächsten Jahr feiern Jakarta und Berlin ein Jubiläum – 25 Jahre Städtepartnerschaft. Ein guter Anlass einem indonesieninteressierten Filmpublikum neue filmische Kreationen aus dem Inselstaat in einem eigenen Festivalformat zu präsentieren.

Synopsis: This is a documentary about their passion, militancy, and simplicity – the Ballads of Cinema Lovers. Cinema Lovers Community (CLC) Purbalingga, established by Bowo Leksono in 2006, has so far generated a number of young filmmakers with a lot of national-level achievements. Moreover, CLC Purbalingga has been consistently and independently holding the Purbalingga Film Festival, presenting a »Celebration« of Film Festival amidst society, holding the open-air cinema in many villages in Banyumas Raya. Purbalingga is so far away from the luxurious, cutting-edge theaters and the frenetic film industry of the Capital; yet, there is where the zest to present the best for Indonesian cinema keeps alive and propagating.

Synopsis: In a megacity like Jakarta, things change swiftly and constantly. In the Absence of the Sun follows three women as they search for belonging in a metropolis that never sleeps. Gia (Adinia Wirasti), returns from years of living abroad in New York and attempts to adjust to the culture shock. She seeks solace in her former love, Naomi (Marissa Anita), who seems to have conformed to upper-class societal norms of materialism and superficiality. Together, they try to resolve their feelings for one another and the people they have become. Meanwhile, Indri (Ina Panggabean) works as a towel girl in a local gym, dreaming of a better life, and widow Surya (Dayu Wijanto) discovers her deceased husband’s affair with a woman named Sofia and starts frequenting the lounge she performs at. Exploring Jakarta's multitude of unspoken tensions between tradition and modernity, Kuswandi's second feature film is both nuanced and tender, humorous and poignant. The film is as much about its charismatic characters as it is an unflinching look at the city itself - one that is undergoing incredible and rapid change, its inhabitants both losing and finding themselves in the swirl.

Synopsis: This is the story of women those are live in polygamy life. It's about their consequence to accept the status as other wife. There are three stories, packed with satire and surprisingly connected with another stories.
Salma (Jajang C. Noer) is a woman with her good past, results her as professional doctor. She married a wealthy and loyal man named H. Ali Rohim with his good life as businessman. Then he married two women again, Indri and Ima. Salma accepts it, but, her son Nadin (Winky Wiryawan) who is the reason why Salma accepts polygamy, grows becomes a man who denied it.
Esi (Shanty) is a Javanese woman who wants to be a make-up artist. She brought by her Uncle (Lukman Sardi) to Jakarta to make her aspiration reached. But, she should accepts her destiny that Uncle wants to marry her. It's insane if knows Uncle haves two wives, Dwi (Rieke Diah Pitaloka) and Sri (Ria Irawan). Finally Esi accepts the marry and tries to escape from the house with Dwi that becomes her love interest.
Ming (Dominique Agisca Diyose) is a Mandarin woman who wants to be an actress. She takes as waitress during her acting school in a duck-roast restaurant who owned by her far family, married couple Koh Abun (Tio Pakusadewo) and Cik Linda (Ira Maya Sopha). Koh Abun in his desire, decides to keep Ming as his young wife without Cik Linda's acceptance. Ming slowly knows that becomes the second wife which never known by anyone is never being happy

Synopsis: ‘Get in Tune’ is a music documentary film that takes you on the journey of the only Asian participant in one of the world’s highest level of choir competitions. For the first time, they are able to get the chance to represent their country, Indonesia, in the Grand Prix stage. The team is under pressure while expected to bring home a victory. Being able to depart was already a challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges they would face in the European competition.

Synopsis: Feeling under developed in his hometown, Samosir, North Sumatra, SAHAT travels to the capital city and tries his luck. He is a writer, and has several times sent manuscripts to Jakarta. His latest work is said to have won a nation wide novel competition and SAHAT now plans to claim the promised right for his novel to be published. Along for the ride comes SAHAT’s best friend TIGOR, a bus driver also desperate for a better life. TIGOR is mostly motivated by a recent encounter with an old friend, SABAR, who had moved to Jakarta long ago and occasionally returns home to share his stories of success and riches, Upon their arrival, the two young men are shattered by a disturbing truth–Jakarta is not the place they dreamed it to be. SAHAT’s wining manuscript will not be published but instead be adapted into a film for political campaign purposes. TIGOR struggles to find employment of any kind. SABAR is in fact a fraud: a penniless government lobbyist. The city is full of corruption, lies and necessary violence. SAHAT retracts his manuscript, refusing the film deal. Walks away from the fabricated publishing office and it’s mischievous owner. Nevertheless, this sparked admiration from the owner’s daughter MONA. She chases after him and can not help but to reveal her fondness for the young writer.
MONA introduces SAHAT to Jakarta’s upper class–a life SAHAT had always hungered for. Soon marriage followed. With the binding price of selling his manuscript, his ideals, his soul for the political campaign once again. TIGOR on the opposite end of the spectrum inhales poverty and violence on a daily basis. He struggles to keep his head above water in the city’s contaminated slum. Forced to partake in a gangster way of life in order to survive. SABAR–a fraud with a big heart. He fondles with illegal government tender practices to provide the dream life for his beloved wife. With one final push, he lands the project of a lifetime. A golden payoff. With inevitable consequences. »A Moon Hangs Above The Graveyard« is a tale of hardships in the capital city. SAHAT, TIGOR and SABAR, three friends from Samosir, North Sumatra, quest after greatness whilst desperately holding on to their inner idealism.

As a community of farmers who rely heavily on the traditional Javanese calendar to plant crops become puzzled by the dramatic change of seasons. In the rhythm of a slow visual journey THE LAND BENEATH THE FOG takes an intimate look at family relations in Genikan. Describing a life on the brink of vanishing, this documentary offers deep insights into' an invisible and disenfranchised society, which is struggling hard to maintain its existence.
