Die Frankfurter Buchmesse gilt als Zentrum der internationalen Medienwelt und kulturelles Großereignis. An keinem Ort der Welt zeigt sich die Publishing- und Medienbranche vielfältiger, innovativer und internationaler als an diesen fünf Tagen im Oktober. Auf der diesjährigen Buchmesse – 11. Bis 15. Oktober – wird es auch wieder einige Programmpunkte mit indonesischen Akteuren geben.

LITERARY READING 1: BETWEEN LAUGHTER AND TEARS IN INDONESIA TODAY

ORT: Messe, Lesezelt (Agora)

Indonesian authors Mona Sylviana and Zen Hae are two very different kinds of writers. Mona looks matter-of-factly at the world in which women live and how they must cope with, challenge, and overcome male domination. Her stories are frank but strong. Perhaps because he is male, Zen Hae sees the world differently, especially the city of Jakarta in which he was raised. His stories are full of irony and humor.

POLITICS AND PERSECUTION:TESTING TOLERANCE IN INDONESIA

Multicultural Indonesia, well known for its ethnic and religious diversity, has in recent political elections, seen its tolerance tested. Islamic extremism and its adoption by politicians as a tool for the acquisition of power has divided and infuriated the voting populace, giving rise to further factionalism. Indonesian authors, Avianti Armand of the Christian minority, Ben Sohib of the Muslim majority, and Zaky Yamani a journalist turned novelist, discuss the effect of this trend and what it means for Indonesia’s future.

IMAGINE INDONESIA: RISING SALES IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Sales in the rights to children’s books in Indonesia reached an all-time high last year and the total number of sales of children books is now only second to books of fiction. Indonesia, the fourth largest country in the world, has a huge younger population and both produces and buys children’s book content on a massive scale. Debby Lukito Goeyardi, award-winning children’s book author, and Noni Mira Timotius, Head of Publishing at Bhuana Ilmu Populer publishing house discuss current and possible future trends in Indonesia’s children’s book industry.

Home Sweet Home by Indonesian photographer, Anton Gautama, gives insight into Chinese-Indonesian culture through his photographs of the interiors of Chinese-Indonesian homes in East Java and South Sulawesi. Markus Schaden, founder of the Photo Book Museum, discusses the book concept with the photographer and his publisher.

LITERARY READING 2: LIFE IN A WORLD BOTH LONELY AND SURREAL

 Aan Mansyur is a hugely popular Indonesian poet whose latest collection of soulful poems sold more than 50,000 copies. Short story author, Triyanto Triwikromo describes in his stories realities that are more surreal than any surrealist could imagine. And Nuril Basri, in his latest novel, looks at the intersection between life in a conservative Muslim community and the Jakarta underworld. Join them for readings and a discussion guided by award-winning German poet, Marius Hulpe.

ith 17,000 islands and a total geographical area of almost 2 million square kilometers, challenges to book distribution in Indonesia are daunting—not just for foreign publishers who hope to tap into Indonesia’s potentially lucrative market but for domestic publishers as well. What is the Indonesian government doing to overcome these challenges? And how about Indonesian publishers and on-the-ground literary activists. Learn about unique ways players from each of these sectors are solving this problem. Moderated by Claudia Kaiser, Vice President of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Petty Elliott, well-known food critic, author, chef, and food consultant is, first and foremost, a proponent of modern Indonesian cuisine. The author of Jakarta Bites: Exploring Vibrant Street Food from the Heart of Indonesia, which won the 2017 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the category of street food, will focus her cooking demonstration on three exotically flavoured vegetarian dishes from her successful book. She brings the popular traditions of street food into a gourmet setting, using a fun modern style focusing on the freshness of local ingredients.
